The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers comic book is getting the animated-series treatment starring Adam Devine and Blake Anderson. Plus, more reveals will come at San Diego Comic-Con.
In this uptight day and age, we all deserve to blow off some steam (take that literally or figuratively, if you will). And if cartoons are your stress-reliever of choice, you may be happy to hear that a new adult animated series is coming to the block.
The ’60s comic book The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers from Gilbert Shelton is getting adapted as an animated series, with executive producers of King of the Hilland American Dad on board. What’s more, Workaholics fans will be excited to know that the series will star Adam Devine and Blake Anderson.
For those of you less familiar with this fan-favorite comic book series, the stories revolve around none other than the three fabulous “freak” friends — all of whom have an, ahem, passion for the recreational use of marijuana. But with the popularity of movies like Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle and Pineapple Express, it’s definitely certain that a stoner comic-turned-animated series could have a winning spot in viewers’ hearts.
Devine and Anderson released a joint statement expressing their excitement for the series, saying:
We connected so much to these characters. They’re just trying to enjoy life while understanding the world around them, and the adventures they go through along the way had us fully giggling while simultaneously making us think. When the opportunity arose to get involved not just as talent but also on a creative level, we jumped at the chance and also WEED, man!
More information about the series will be revealed at San Diego Comic-Con, which begins next week. The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers will have its own panel on Friday, July 19 at 7 p.m. in room 6 BCF. Both Devine and Anderson are set to be there, including showrunners Alan Freedland and Alan Cohen and writing team Jeremy Lehrer and Daniel Lehrer. If you’re in San Diego for the Comic-Con weekend, the panel is bound to be a fun addition to your schedule.
The series is already greenlit for eight, 22-minute episodes. And while no network or streaming platform for the show has been announced yet, you can look forward to seeing the show make its debut in early 2020.
